. . . CARLYLE COMPRESSOR CO., a division of Carrier Corp., which announced that Underwriters Laboratories (UL) has recognized several of its compressors, including the new semi-hermetic screw compressor (pictured), for use with alternative refrigerant “Genetron” AZ-50 (R-507) from AlliedSignal Inc.

Carlyle also received ISO 9002 registration for the manufacture of its 06D/E and “Compound Cooling” compressors for European trade.

Richard D’Aversa, director of compressor business at Carlyle, said UL recognition “provides our customers the assurance that our compressors are reliable choices for low- and medium-temperature refrigeration applications using R-507.”

The company’s products recognized by UL for use with R-507 are: semi-hermetic screw, Compound Cooling, and 06D/E semi-hermetic.

. . . William H. Clark II, P.E., an engineer with O’Connell Robertson and Associates in Austin, Texas, who has been named to the Who’s Who in the Southwest.

Clark is an honors graduate of the University of Texas at Austin, where he was an Engineering Scholar. He was preparing a text for the BNP Technical Book Division on energy conservation projects in existing buildings.

Clark is a member of ASHRAE, IES, and ASME, where he is the technical chairman of the Geothermal Energy Committee. He is also an advisor to the Home Energy Rating Systems Council, and to the Building Environment and Thermal Envelope Council of the National Institute of Building Sciences.

In addition, Clark provides daily energy-conservation tips to the Austin newspaper; has a daily energy-conservation spot on a local AM station; and has written many magazine articles on energy topics.

He recently presented three technical papers at the Hot and Humid Climate Building Symposium in Dallas on energy-saving computer programs, and will present four more at the Intersociety Energy Conversion Engineering Conference in Monterey, Calif., in August, on geothermal topics.

. . . The Replacement Components Division (RCD) of Carrier Corp., which received New York Gov. Mario M. Cuomo’s (right) annual Excelsior “Quality at Work” Award.

Cuomo spent nearly an hour walking the floor of the Syracuse, N.Y., plant and warehouse and chatting with some of the division’s 410 employees before he made the award presentation.

During his tour, Cuomo watched as a skin-wrap machine spun a web of black plastic around a load of motors on the floor. He whispered to Ray Harrington, the machine operator. Harrington nodded in agreement. Then the governor took a pen and scrawled the message, “Wrapped by Mario Cuomo,” onto the back of his business card and tucked it inside the black wrapper. Harrington said the order was headed for Carrier Bock in Irving, Texas.

In his formal remarks, Cuomo predicted U.S. companies will continue to rebound against foreign competition as long as they apply innovation, technology, and superior knowledge.

The Excelsior Award honors New York businesses, government agencies, and educational institutions that demonstrate commitment to providing quality products and services, developing a quality workforce, and fostering cooperative labor-management relations.

The RCD sells more than 80,000 different parts and components that go into Carrier, Bryant, Day & Night, and Payne brand air conditioners, heat pumps, furnaces, and refrigeration systems, as well as “Totaline” parts and supplies.

NEW YORK GOV. MARIO CUOMO tells his Carrier audience that the U.S. can continue to recapture markets lost to foreign competition if its workforce applies superior innovation, technology, and knowledge to business challenges.
